Telecine

.

FDL90 - Post-production Telecine

The newest CCD telecine from BTS is the FDL 90.

The advantages of a CCD telecine are well known: reliability, excellent picture quality, no burn-in, no ageing or replacement of tubes.

The FDL 90 is a CCD telecine for 4:3 and 16:9 display formats, offering the flexibility of several film sizes and aspect ratios. It combines novel digital and analog electronics together with the proven film deck and servo of the worldwide successful FDL 60 telecine. The experience gained from the development of an experimental CCD telecine for HDTV was used for a novel sizing principle which offers full bandwidth to approximately 30 percent linear magnification. The patented sizing system works with an EDTV CCD scanner, which provides 1330 active pixels. The scanner is working with video signals of 8.6 MHz bandwith.

In contrast to digital zooming devices, which use two-dimensional filters, horizontal and vertical sizing is achieved by varying the horizontal line frequency and the CCD sensor clock frequency.

Changeover between 4:3 and 16:9 is a single "one-button" function providing an additional 16:9 flag for the VTR or the broadcast channel. The precise size and position of the selected aspect is repeatable by microcomputer control. A new preamplifier technology and a 4:4:4 store provide full bandwidth in all channels.

Other FDL 90 features include ten-bit resolution for more flexibility in color correction, as well as low cost for maintenance. The telecine is easy to operate because it has automatic correction of fixed-pattern noise, shading and white level. Integrated analog and digital 4:2:2 component interfaces permit easy installation in a modern studio environment. The FDL 90 is switchable between 625/50 and 525/60 TV standards.

Additionally, the DCR 500 allows the storage, editing and transmission of 16:9 aspect ratio EDTV pictures, and provides the capability to run four machines in parallel with accuracy in record and playback - under the control of its own in-built software using a single control panel.

DCR 500 controls are organized and laid out to facilitate fast, efficient control over the whole range of post production applications. And great care has been taken to ensure that all the different types of machine user are provided with menus tailored to match their particular applications and needs precisely.

Features such as automatic tracking, automatic playback/record equalization, a control track head built in to the quick-change scanner, and on-line error rate monitoring boost post production quality and speed. While comprehensive diagnostics and design that facilitates fast, simple maintenance combine to reduce downtime and service costs.

The automatic tracking system built in to the DCR 500 provides accurate playback without the complications of dynamic tracking. It completely eliminates the need for manual adjustment of tracking during operation.

Unique to the DCR 500, the modular design of the scanner allows quick interchange, dramatically reducing downtime and enhancing productivity.

The DCR 500 is the only VTR worldwide which offers a personal card to simplify the work of individual operators. With the personal card, each operator can create and hold a menu tailored to meet his own specific needs, ready to be entered almost instantly into any DCR 500 to which he is assigned.

DVEator Option - Digital Video Effects Animator

The DVEator option to the Prizm Workstation performs real-time mapping of live video on animated 3D models and surfaces. The DVEator sets a new price/performance standard by using proprietary Pinnacle technology to separate the model and animation creation tasks from the live video mapping task.

The creation of DVEator sequences is accomplished on a Pinnacle Graphics Work-Station system or a PC configured with the DVEator Creation Kit. Once animated shapes and/or surfaces have been created, the live video mapping is accomplished using the D\ Eator Module.

DVEator Advantages
The DVEator offers the following advantages over competitive systems:
Any shape that can be modeled and animated using the Sculptor modeling software can be mapped with live video.
Animated shapes are not limited to a few files or patches, but can be comprised of tens of thousands of polygons, allowing creation of complex shapes and surfaces that metamorphose in real time.

The DVEator pixel switcher allows mapping of two live video sources. This permits creation of page turns with different images on the two sides of the page in a single pass. Painted objects as well as objects mapped with live video can be animated in a single pass. This unique and powerful feature allows creation of metallic three dimensional borders and painted models intersecting with live video surfaces in a single pass. Multiple animated objects having different shapes can be mapped with live video in a single pass. Metamorphosis of one shape into another is possible.

Advanced 3D modeling features can be applied to the animated sequences, including highlights, shading and shadows. The Prizm Workstation is the only product that allows the customer to start with a low cost "bread and butter" effects system and upgrade to DVEator capability; as opposed to purchasing an entirely new system.

MNR9 - Median Noise Reducer

Before the actual development of our new signal processor was started, the distortions, as they appear in the typical applications for a noise reducer were thoroughly analyzed:

Besides a white noise (i.e. all frequencies contribute equally to the noise) which covers the picture, short-term noise portions of high amplitudes (so-called high-energy noise) are particularly distracting.

Those distortions appear in all conceivable applications for a signal processor but they are given different names: in RF transmissions they are called "glitches", for tape it is "dropouts** and with film scanners we know them as "scratches**.

The median filtering is suited to solve this problem entirely. In turn, also recursive filters are of particular use where the noise is statistical: Grain in film, tape noise or gathered news, taken under bad lighting conditions.

The MNR 9 combines the best of both worlds in one sophisticated design, a three-dimensional median filtering and a newly developed recursive filtering based on our vast know-how of previous systems.
Additionally we have added a synchronizer and a sophisticated contour enhancer to get a real problem solver.
